Fun Family Activities to Promote Bonding

Nature Walks

We are lucky enough to have a few lakes near our house and one of them is a short walk away. Taking the girls on a walk around the lake has been such a great way for us to get out for a quick change of scenery. Some days we bird watch, other days we count all the different animals that we see, and some days we just sit on a rock and talk halfway through the walk. The whole point is we get out in nature and get some fresh air. Plus, when we’re out I’m less distracted and can focus on listening to them and their stories. Another added bonus is the sunlight and the trees instantly boost my mood.

Start A Traditon – Sunday Movie and Take Out Dinner

Normally, Joe and I work so much during the week that we rarely get quality time with the kids. I sell residential real estate and that means that I am not home on weekends during the day and by the time I do get home I have tons of follow up work and I’m exhausted. Now that I can’t work we’ve started a Sunday movie day where we all watch a movie together and order food from our favorite Indian restaurant in New Rochelle, Coromandel. It’s such a luxury to have family time and we are relishing in this activity. This has been one of the nicest parts of the lock down. It give us something to look forward to. Movie Day also helps to mark the day on Sunday, which can get lost when every day feels like Groundhog Day and the weeks seem to have no real start or finish.

Karaoke Night

So last week I had a karaoke night for work and was practicing all day with my team on Zoom calls. At first the kids were so annoyed and they hated the song choice but by the end of the night the girls actually asked to join me during my performance of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” by The Beatles. After the performance we had so much fun that we decided to continue the karaoke party and perform the song again for their dad. Then we just kept going and had an impromptu karaoke party just the four of us. We had so much fun and shared so many laughs. Plus, my Scarlet who is normally a bit more shy totally came out of her shell and let me record her! Scarlet even went as far as asking me to add the Beatles song to her playlist! We are now planning on having Karaoke night every weekend. This week the kids have that their dad and I perform a duet.

Scavenger Hunts

Another fun idea that I got from work was to do a scavenger hunt. Our office manager had us all do a scavenger hunt while we were on a Zoom call and the kids watched in amazement. They were so excited and really wanted to participate. After the call was over and they finished the school work we decided to have a scavenger hunt of their own and they had a great time. Here are some lists you can use to help you get started. It’s so much fun and can get pretty competitive. You can have teams or each family member can play for his or her self.
